07-27-2008 Another CPU bites the dust and can be added to the list of "don't bother" when it comes to the Optiplex GX280 SFF. If 672 does not post with various BIOS changes, I will then suspect that 5x0 and 6x0 CPUs will work, but only frequencies of 3.4GHz and below is the limits coded in the BIOS for reliable operation of SFF systems (higher temperatures and 160W PSU). Next I will change BIOS A08 back to A06 or A07 then try the 672 again, in hopes that one of the versions has the option to enable EM64T.Īny better ideas out there? Good and bad gx280 CPU experience would still be appriciated.

According to an Intel notes on these newer processors "Processor will not operate- including 32-bit operation, without an Intel EM64T -enabled Bios." I decided I should update the 915G chipset driver to A09. 'Had to reinstalled the 550 to get into "Setup" and saw that QuickStartup was selected which skips over some compatibility checks, HT was OFF, so I changed these settings, but the Bios showed "NO" for EM65T enabled and not changeable, I think this is the problem. 07-25-2008 Well, I installed the 672 and immediately got an "incompatible processor" "system halted" (no F1 to continue) error message, so I could not F2 into "Setup".

I read on this forum (2006) that there has been success with the 650 CPU on GX280 SFF. Has anyone had sucess installing a 672 on any Dell motherboard? My concern is whether it will set the correct multiplier for I loaded theĪ08 BIOS and from what I have read it should recognize I have a 672 coming in from Hong Kong in a day or two.ĩ15 and 925 chipsets are listed as compatible on an Intel I think they need some, they sound like they have jet engines in them when they heat up. I haven't done anything for additional cooling. All the power goes to the games! These small desktops have 210W power supplies. Nothing installed that starts up automatically (antivirus and such). I should mention that the 2 computers for my nephews are using 17" CRT's w/a resolution of 1024x768, I'm sure the larger the monitor you go, the bigger the performance hit will be. Too bad the GX280 doesn't support native RAID. I will just transfer my 8600GTS, drives, etc. The new one also has a 3.0GHz 530? processor. Even though the GX280 only has a SATA-150 controller, the performance went from 59Mbps transfers to 80Mbps, the memory went from 1.8Gbps to 8!! (compared to my system). I ran the benchmarks on these systems and they outperform my custom built AMD Athlon 4000+ system in some area's by 4X faster!!! The GX280's clearly have a better memory and hard drive controller. These systems are fantastic (atm) they boot quickly, load games quickly, and play without any problems at all. We play Q3, Q4 (openCoop), UT Classic, UT 2004, UT 3, TA, SupCom, Forged Alliance, C&C TFD, C&C 3, SW Battlefront 2, and many more. That's Bull! These systems play every game that my home built rig w/an 8600GTS plays. The 8400GS gets some bad press as not being a gaming card. I built these 2 systems as gaming rigs for my nephews when they come over to play. Worked like a charm! (I'm cheap and didn't want to pay $10 for the LP bracket). The VGA is on a small cable, so I just cut out a few of the squares in the vented area of the back of the case and popped the VGA output in, using the screws & 2 small washers to lock it in place. Seagate 250GB 7200.10 16MB SATA2 HDD's $59.99, and finally nVidia GeForce 8400GS 16X PCI-Express 256MB (systems say their 512MB, but i think that's do to TurboCaching) graphics cards, 1 MSI $35.99 & 1 ECS $34.99, both had $10 rebates, both are full-size cards that would take a low-profile bracket, I simply cut the tall bracket down and it fit in my case, with this option your removing the VGA adapter and keeping the DVI/S-Video outputs. First, I upgraded the memory with Kingston 2GB 533MHz Dual-Channel Kits from Newegg $35.99.

I have 2 GX280 P4 520 2.8GHz HT 800FSB 1MB Small Desktops (not the SFF).
